How Double Glazing Works
Insulating your house is an extremely important and easy way to lower overall energy bills and make your home a more comfortable place. This can be done through many avenues, such as putting insulating fiber in walls and installing specially designed windows and doors to cut down drafts. Double glazing is one such method of window and door design which helps with the problem of a poorly insulated house, but just how does it work?
Glass in windows is used to let in light and provide a barrier to the elements outdoors. The problem is that many windows do not sufficiently regulate the temperature, and allow houses to get hot or cold, depending on the season. Double glazing is a technique or window making that aims to cut down on this temperature transfer. The way that it works in windows is simple. There are two panes of glass separated by a layer of air or another gas. The real insulating power comes from the trapped air. Heat travels much more slowly through this trapped air than it does through traditional windows.
This reduction in the transfer of heat, through double glazing can help to lower heating and air conditioning bills because it insulates and allows the temperature inside the home to remain more or less constant. In the summer heat doesn’t get in, and in the winter heat doesn’t get out.
